Sweden’s largest water park worth $10.6 million was destroyed in several powerful explosions.
The incident occurred on Monday, February 12, in the city of Gothenburg. The series of explosions was preceded by a fire. It is currently known that 12 people were injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 10:00 local time. Almost immediately, an explosion occurred in one of the water park’s structures. Rescuers warn of the possibility of the fire spreading to neighboring buildings. A nearby hotel and office buildings were evacuated.
“There is a lot of plastic in the structure. So (the smoke) is unhealthy to inhale. That’s why we are issuing a health warning,” said Swedish Rescue Service spokesman Klas Luppert.
Eyewitnesses say that the explosion in the water park was so powerful that it was felt in neighboring buildings. It is also known that at least 12 people were injured in the fire.
The Oceana water park was scheduled to open this summer, and its construction cost 1.2 billion kronor ($10.6 million). It covers 6,000 square meters indoors and 4,000 outdoors, with 14 water attractions. It was planned to accommodate 1750 visitors.
